About Hillary
Hillary Easom, M.Ed.
** Senior Yoga Teacher **
(formerly registered with Yoga Alliance: 500+ hours yoga training, 2000+ hours teaching yoga, prenatal yoga teacher & teacher trainer)
I’ve been a teacher more than half my life. I taught middle and high school English for a few years, left to embark on a writing career in my late 20s, and recently came full circle, teaching yoga for two years at a secondary school. I like to joke that I started my yoga path in a teaching role. During graduate school, a friend asked me to guide him through a yoga practice following direction from a book. I’m not sure how well I taught, but I was intrigued enough to borrow the book and begin my own practice.
I soon recognized that yoga is not just about the physical body. Yoga supported me through bouts of depression and anxiety; it helped me feel grounded and balanced. When I became pregnant with my first child, I started taking prenatal yoga classes and practiced nearly every day. Yoga played a huge role in my pregnancies and births; I was inspired to one day become a yoga teacher.
Upon receiving my 200-hour yoga teaching certificate, I quickly realized this was just the tip of the iceberg. Since then, I’ve taken hundreds more hours of training to deepen my knowledge and skills; there is always more to learn. I’ve integrated my learning into teaching thousands of classes, workshops and trainings and leading a number of retreats.
My own yoga teaching style is best described as a breath-centric slow flow focused on individual sensation. Integrating some longer-held postures to build strength, stability and stillness of mind allows for alignment cues and time for students to notice energetic shifts. I like to incorporate yoga philosophy, mantra and/or mudras into each class that I teach. Most often, I teach all-levels classes — i.e., teachers, beginners and just about every level in between. My intent is that every student—regardless of age, fitness level or experience—finds something in the practice that speaks to their current needs.
“I am still a teacher, still a writer, always a student and forever an adventurer.”
